Cybervoting:
Good Or Bad
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The technological revolution has brought
about myriad social changes, not the least of which includes
the concept of cybervoting. In its purest form, this
alternative to physical ballot voting stands to
revolutionize the entire democratic process; according to
proponents, cybervoting will give back to the people what
has long been gone from the political process. Additionally,
the implementation of cybervoting will benefit individuals
who might not otherwise make the effort to vote, inevitably
increasing the ultimate turnout. That cybervoting stands to
get more people involved with the political process is
reason enough to support its acceptance; however, there are
even more fundamental reasons why cybervoting is an idea
whose time has arrived. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Democrat
Ads 2000: A Marxist, Semiological, Feminist, and
Psychoanalytical Critique
[ send
me this paper ]
A 6 page discussion of the power of advertising. Proclaims
that advertising is really aggressive capitalist attack
seeking to persuade the mindless millions which live among
us to buy a particular product. The product itself can take
a variety of forms, from the latest toy to the most high
tech gadget for your kitchen. Even more concerning, however,
is when the product being sold by advertising is political
ideology. Examines the political and philosophical intent of
one particular ad sponsored by the Democratic Party and
targeting George W. Bush's views on abortion. Condemns the
ad as a misrepresentation of information and feminist
values. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Elaboration
Livelihood Theory and the American Presidential Campaign of
2000:
[ send
me this paper ]
This 12 page report discusses the concepts related to the
elaboration likelihood theory, when applied to the
presidential election. The report focuses on how it serves
as a means through which social scientists, political
analysts, and communication theorists can present a view of
public and political behavior that can be most enlightening.
Attitudes, attitude change, and the two paths of persuasion
that affect attitude change -- the “central route” and
the “peripheral route.” are discussed. Bibliography
lists 4 sources.

Election
2000
[ send
me this paper ]
A 17 page paper discussing the media's treatment of the
campaign and its two leading candidates, Al Gore and George
W. Bush. The purpose of the paper is to determine whether
the media shifts its support to the "underdog" as
determined by the polls, by examining both the basis of
journalism and examples of articles published at varying
times throughout the campaign. The paper concludes that
journalists do not present the "full, fair and
accurate" picture of facts as they exist, but of facts
taken in the context of the philosophies of John Rawls, who
maintains that fairness lies in basing need on the most
disadvantaged of the society. The paper demonstrates bias in
the published accounts, but bias based on philosophy rather
than through overt intent. Bibliography lists 17 sources.

Election
2000 and the Appointment of Supreme Court Justices
[ send
me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses the fact that the president
appoints the justices of the Supreme Court, thereby
influencing interpretation of Constitutional law for many
years to come. The argument has been raised that it is an
important enough issue that the American voters have a right
to know what qualities either Vice President Al Gore or
Governor George W. Bush will seek out in a justice he might
appoint. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Elections:
U.S. vs Turkey
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing the differences. Elections in many
of the world's nations dissolve into riots and can be more
devisive than unifying. Such is not the case in either the
US or Turkey - both nations are able to conduct elections
and institute the resulting mandates of the citizenry with
relative lack of strife. The primary difference between
elections in these two nations is that the US has had many
more years of constitutional evolution than has Turkey,
resulting in better-defined rules of procedure and in a
greatly reduced number of political parties. Bibliography
lists 6 sources.

Electoral
Process In The United States
[ send
me this paper ]
An 8 page paper that election and electoral process as
reviewed in three articles. The writer begins by discussing
the fact that the U.S. Constitution does not guarantee
citizens the right to vote. The essay then discusses a
number of issues, including the electoral college, the flaws
in the election process with specific examples from several
states, the actions of the U.S. Supreme Court in the last
presidential election and what needs to be done to change
the problems. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Ethics
& Political Campaign Contributions
[ send

A 7 page paper discussing the ethical questions surrounded
by Presidential campaign contribution abuses and the current
bills before both the House and Senate for major reform of
campaign contribution laws. If the bipartisan legislation
passes Congress, Political Action Committees will not be
allowed to make any campaign contributions and loopholes
will be tightened, forcing candidates into accountability
for their sources of funds. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Final
Days of the 2000 Presidential Campaign and George W. Bush
[ send
me this paper ]
This 10 page report discusses the 2000 campaign for the
presidency, focusing on George W. Bush and the ways that his
style and messages have changed over the course of the
political race. Both Vice President Al Gore and Governor
George W. Bush made every effort to make their issues and
their concerns appeal to as many people as possible. As the
campaign strategists for Bush and Gore desperately
calculated ways to win enough states to amass the 270
Electoral College votes needed to win the White House, their
strategies depend on reaching the greatest number of voters
to assure that they win those voters’ states’ share of
the electoral votes. For example, Bush’ trip to Minnesota,
a Democratic stronghold demonstrates the ways in which Bush
was willing to make every minute of the final weeks of the
campaign count. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

George
W. Bush's View of the Church
[ send
me this paper ]
This 5 page paper provides an analytical view of the issue
of George Bush's sometimes contradictory conservatism
regarding affiliations with church leaders. While George W.
Bush has asserted his Christian affiliation and has talked
openly about embracing his religious ideals, he has also
shied away from affiliations with men like Jerry Falwell and
Pat Robertson, even though Falwell has openly expressed
support for his campaign. This paper considers the reasons
behind Bush's views on affiliation with church leaders and
depicts a cautious Bush in light of his father's experiences
with being openly condemned for his affiliations with the
Unification Church. Bibliography lists 4 source.

Gun
Control: One of the Most Pressing Issues of Our Time
[ send
me this paper ]
A 6 page discussion of the political environment of gun
control. Maintains that our existing gun control laws are
sufficient and that the current move towards additional
regulation is an attack on our Second Amendment rights to
bear arms. Provides a brief overview of the gun control
approaches of Presidential Candidates Al Gore and George W.
Bush. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

control held by U.S. presidential candidates Albert Gore Jr.
and George W. Bush. Presents Gore as a candidate who has

Contrasts his philosophies to that of George W. Bush who
believes that existing gun control laws are sufficient and
what is needed is additional enforcement of those laws.

In
Defense Of Bill Clinton And His Pardons
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Upholding the office of United States
Presidents inherently affords one the opportunity to wield
certain power privileges as supported by the Constitution.
One of these advantage, according to Article II, Section II
of this historical document, is that the president shall
have Power to Grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses
against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.
That other politicians or even the general public did not
support some of the people who have been pardoned through
the years did not matter; rather, the President of the
United States possesses the sole discretion of who is
pardoned and how many are pardoned regardless of outside
opinion. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Integrated
Marketing Communication and the Final Weeks of the
Presidential Campaign
[ send
me this paper ]
This 15 page report discusses integrated marketing
communication and Al Gore’s campaign for the presidency.
In the final weeks of the race, campaign strategists must
calculate ways to win enough states to amass the 270
Electoral College votes needed to win the White House. As a
result, their strategies depend on reaching the greatest
number of voters to assure that they win those voters’
states’ share of the electoral votes. A focused and
integrated marketing effort is absolutely essential for
success. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Interest
Group Liberalism
[ send
me this paper ]
This 11 page report discusses the impact and influence of
interest groups in the functions of government in the United
States. Recently, it has appeared that the “people” with
the best representation in the government are not individual
people at all but the special interest groups that
ostensibly position themselves to “represent” the
thinking of the people. Bargaining groups or interests
control the decisions of government and the end result is
the creation of laws that apportion out the true power of
the state to interest groups with the power and organization
to influence government agencies, neglecting people who do
not belong to such groups, and maintaining the privileges of
those who do. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

A 10 page summation and analysis of political commentator
Jim Hightower's new book, "If the gods had meant us to

a serious message about the crisis to democracy caused by
the power of large corporations. No additional sources
cited.

John
Ensign / Senate Campaign
[ send
me this paper ]
15 pages in length. Republican John Ensign did not lose the
Senate race because he was not popular; indeed, the one-time
veterinarian and casino director held much of the Nevada
constituency in the palm of his hand. His clean-cut, family
image, handsome exterior and outward appeal for the
betterment of all Nevadans placed Ensign in good favor with
the public. However, he was up against a tough Democratic
incumbent by the name of Harry Reid. Both candidates pitched
a good, solid campaign, yet only one was ultimately chosen
to occupy Nevada's Senate seat. The writer discusses
Ensign's campaign as it relates to the 1998 Senate race.
Bibliography lists 10 sources.

John
Hospers and the Libertarian Manifesto
[ send
me this paper ]
This 4 page report discusses John Hospers, a philosophy
professor at the University of Southern California and the
Libertarian Party’s first presidential candidate (1972).
Hospers’ entire philosophy can be easily summed up in one
sentence from his Manifesto: “Each human being has the
right to live his life as he chooses, compatibly with the
equal right of all other human beings to live their lives as
they choose” (pp. 43). No additional sources.

Bias: CNN and the 2000 Presidential Race
[ send
me this paper ]
An 8 page contention that CNN coverage during the 2000
Presidential Race was biased. Compares the amount and
quality of coverage given George W. Bush verses Al Gore in
both ad and report format. Contrasts such aspects as
presentation of issues, photographic, lighting, and auditory
accompaniment. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Morality
In Government
[ send
me this paper ]
7 pages in length. The politicians maintain that there is a
high degree of morality in government, but most of the rest
of us are beyond even acknowledging such a claim. The paper
uses the issue of Presidential campaign contribution abuses
and Attorney General Janet Reno's investigation as example
rather than address some of the seamier aspects of
governmental abuses. Bibliography lists five sources.

Necessary
Compromise in Government.
[ send
me this paper ]
(5 pp) The United States Constitution defines the rights of
its citizens and the rights of those geographical areas
called states. It also defines the structures and the powers
of the federal government, and loosely labels the three
major areas of government as the executive branch, the
legislative branch and the judicial branch. Those who framed
that document were well aware of the tendencies of humans to
first be moved by their own causes rather than those of the
nation, and developed measures that each of the three
segments of government would serve as a "check and
balance" mechanism against the other. In this
discussion we will look at some of the "wish list"
items of the current United States president, George W.
Bush, see if they are causing conflict, and which factors
encourage compromise. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Congressman John Ensign: Home Style And Hill Style Of
Representation
[ send
me this paper ]
8 pages in length. John Ensign is not what most people would
envision as a typical politician. Having spent most of his
time as either a veterinarian or casino director in Las
Vegas, Nevada, it just did not seem a logical progression
for him to forge ahead into politics. But that is exactly
what he did and did well. The political world was sent
spinning when Ensign won the southern Nevada Congressional
seat in 1994, which started a short but illustrious career
that was committed to helping Nevadans. Bibliography lists
10 sources.

Our
Evolving Party System: The Question Of Structure
[ send

6 pages in length. No one is immune from the current
problems that have occurred as a direct result of the
Electoral College style of electing a president. If left up
to the popular vote alone, one might readily surmise that
the campaign approaches might also differ from those of past
elections. The writer discusses the effectiveness of the
current American political structure. Bibliography lists 8
sources.

Committees) which seek to influence the development of
government health care policies for the elderly.
Specifically considered are the historical development of
the health care issue, including social, political and
environmental factors influencing its evolution; key people
involved in the development of healthcare for the elderly;
its social, political and environmental factors; the
relationship between core values and beliefs on the
development of health care policy and the issue; the sources
of funding for the PACs, evaluating their sufficiency;
analysis of PACs' strategy and evaluating their
effectiveness; and recommendations which might improve PACs'
strategy. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

natures. In California alone, Latino/Hispanic voting
quadruped in the last presidential election. Bibliography
lists 4 sources.

Policy
Reform: Campaign Finance Versus Violence Against Women
[ send
me this paper ]
14 pages in length. Analyzing and understanding the
differences that exist among issues of policy reform
requires one to accept the inherent discrepancies within the
government. Clearly, the strength of interest groups,
insider support and myriad other elements often add up to
overwhelming support for or opposition to a given reform,
rendering it either passed or destroyed with a single
thrust. Such is the case with campaign finance reform and
the tremendous efforts that have been made to achieve
change. When compared with other policy reform like violence
against women, one can easily see how certain efforts are
met with great endorsement as an answer to public outcry,
while others like campaign finance reform continue to evade
congressional passage. Bibliography lists 13 sources.

Political
Gender Gap
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page paper arguing that the "gender gap" in
politics truly does exist. The term was first created in
1980 as presidential candidate Ronald Reagan was found to
consistently rate higher with men than with women. Most
polls have indicated that women have been overwhelmingly in
favor of Democrat candidates in most recent elections,
including that for president in 2000. They took part in
giving control of Congress to the Republicans in 1994,
however. The issue remains an enigma for political
strategists. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Political
Views of Democratic Presidential Candidate Al Gore
Contrasted With Past Republican President Ronald Reagan
[ send
me this paper ]
A 7 page assertion that the political views of Democratic
presidential candidate Al Gore and past Republican president
Ronald Reagan differ tremendously. Al Gore has been a major
participant of an administration which has shown no
reluctance to fabricate an issue designed to cover events
unfavorable to the administration and to promote falsehoods
and misinformation to further an agenda. His liberal stance
is directly contradictory to that of the conservative
Reagan. Concludes that despite his previous career as an
actor, Ronald Reagan became known for his truthful
confrontation of the issues, a reputation which Al Gore is
most likely never to achieve. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Politics
And The Computer Industry
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page paper. The computer industry is heavily involved in
politics in a number of ways. Companies in the industry are
making large contributions to candidates and political
action committees are being established to safeguard the
interests of the industry. There is another side of
involvement, which is the possibility of electronic and/or
Internet voting processes. These issues are discussed.
Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Popular
Political Consent
[ send
me this paper ]
A 9 page paper which discusses how charismatic politicians
are not necessarily needed in mobilizing popular political
consent in our present day. The paper also discusses how
Michael Foot was quite possibly a victim of the media in
British politics and research. The texts used within the
paper are "The Fall of the Public Man" by Richard
Sennett, "Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman,
"Charisma" by Charles Lindholm, "The
Spellbinders, Charismatic Political Leadership" by Ann
Ruth Wilner, and "Economy and Society" by Max
Weber. Bibliography lists 5 additional sources.

Popular
Vote Verses the Electoral Process
[ send
me this paper ]
A 12 page overview of the electoral process and how it
contrasts with the popular vote. Provides a historical
background for the implementation of the electoral process
pointing out that the process was never intended to reflect
popular will. Contends that this process is superior because
it protects the interests of smaller states against the
overwhelming population of the larger states. Provides
several statistics from the 1988 and 2000 presidential
elections which illustrate that smaller states are given a
slight advantage over the larger states in that the
individual vote from these states is more powerful than the
individual vote in the larger states. Bibliography lists 10
sources.

Presidential
Candidates and Philosophical Tradition
[ send
me this paper ]
This excellent 5 page paper discusses the fact that
philosophy is an academic arena which most view as having
little to do with the real world. In viewing the
presidential hopefuls, however, and studying their party
platforms, we can see how some of their policies and views
reflect statements and ideals set by such philosophers as
Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
Describes how the beliefs and visions by each of the
presidential candidates presented are inherently linked in
some way to some or all of these philosophers.

Presidential
Candidates' Positions on the Death Penalty
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page paper examining three candidates' positions on the
death penalty and the writer's reactions to those position.
Until the last presidential election, it was thought that
all campaigns had a definite, decisive end, but it is
difficult to determine when campaigning truly begins. Party
affiliation helps define candidates' positions on issues
such as economic policy and defense spending, but candidates
often are more circumspect about matters that move beyond
abstract policy. In the most recent presidential campaign,
George W. Bush, Al Gore and Pat Buchanan all indicate that
they support the death penalty, but all have differing
views. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Presidential
Election 2000
[ send

(12 pp) Neither Bush nor Gore seem to have impressed most of
the swing voters after a Washington Post survey last week.
In fact, many have reservations about both major party
candidates. Martha Howland, who lives in a Columbus, Ohio
suburb said she "is not pleased with either of the
presidential candidates, and has gotten tired of voting for
the "lesser of two evils. " She sees Gore as too
wooden, stiff," while Bush "doesn't have a good
record. I don't know how smart he is" Bibliography

Presidential
Elections - 1960 versus 2000
[ send
me this paper ]
This 21 page paper compares and contrasts the election
between Kennedy and Nixon in 1960 and the election between
Gore and Bush in 2000. Kennedy and Nixon charted new
territory when they had their debates televised and it won
the election for Kennedy over Vice-President Nixon. The
televised debates between Gore and Bush most likely won the
election for Bush. In both cases, an candidate with no
national experience overcame a vice-president. Some of the
topics included in this essay are: voter characteristics,
voter turnout, the debates, and the issues. Statistical data
included. 11 tables included. Bibliography lists 12 sources.

Presidential
Elections 1960 v 2000
[ send
me this paper ]
This 8 page paper offers a comparison of the 1960 and 2000
presidential elections. In both cases, the count was close
and in both cases, fraud was alleged. The difference was
that Nixon rejected any notion of filing lawsuits while Bush
filed a number of lawsuits. Similarities and differences
between the two elections are discussed. The writer also
speculates as to what this means in terms of the American
political system and the society. Bibliography lists 5
sources.

Private
Morality And Political Leadership
[ send
me this paper ]
15 pages in length. Determining whether or not private
morality should be a component of political leadership is
not the same as deciding if the person in question is
capable of handling the demands of such an office. Indeed,
while some believe there exists a distinct connection
between the two issues, others think that one has absolutely
nothing to do with the other. There is no question that this
particular topic is nothing if not dialectical in that there
is no singularly correct answer; rather, whatever religious,
moral and ethical beliefs one harbors are going to indicate
which side of the issue one supports. Inasmuch as opponents
of private morality contend that what a politician does in
his private life bears no reflection whatsoever upon his
public duties, this paper's view will be one that asserts
just the opposite. The writer discusses the fact that a
political leader's personal activities do, indeed, represent
his commitment to job or country, just as any other
affiliations would. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Republican,
Democrat,, Libertarian, and Gun Control
[ send
me this paper ]
This 8 page report discusses gun control as a major policy
issue and how the Republicans and the Democrats view the
entire topic. It also looks at what the official “party
line” is regarding the issue. A third party, the
Libertarians, are also examined in light of their attitude
regarding gun control. Not surprisingly, the Republicans and
the Democrats have their “official” and collectively
agreed upon justification for their demand for gun control
or their determination to control gun control advocates.
Even the parties whose candidates are not taken seriously by
either mainstream voters or mainstream government have party
“planks” as related to gun control. Bibliography lists 8
sources.

Selling
a Political Candidate’s Personality and Voter Apathy
[ send
me this paper ]
This 6 page report discusses the fact that in the modern
realm of celebrity adulation, the political operatives who
work to define a candidate’s image and then molds his or
her appeal are generally far more interested in the image
that sells among voters rather than anything that can be
truly viewed as “substantive.” Far too often, a
politician’s “handlers” believe they can package a
candidate in ways that will be irresistible to a voter.
Unfortunately, such an attitude suggests that the voter is
unable to make his or her own determinations. Bibliography
lists 8 sources.

(6 pp) When I first learned of elections in Civics 101, one
thing I remember thinking to myself was that I would never
want to be president of the United States. Here it is a
thousand years later, and I still have not changed by mind.
Yet, if you should run into someone of relatively sound mind
and body, who wants to give it a whirl, here is what they,
or you, should know. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

The
Bush Administration
[ send
me this paper ]
A 15 page paper discussing the management technique of this
president. President George Bush is maligned by some,
labeled ineffective by others. In retrospect, there were
telling signs that Bush was a president of a single facet,
that of foreign policy. His domestic policies often were the
victims of systemic inadequacies in the administration. Of
course a single person cannot "run" the
government, and his success largely depends on his ability
to exercise sound management and surround himself with good
people. George Bush was deficient in both areas.

[ send
me this paper ]
This 17 page paper looks at the way that negative
campaigning effects the democratic system, arguing that it
is a destructive force. The paper starts out by examining
what we mean by democracy and negative campaigning and then
uses the Gore and Bush election campaigns of 2000 to
illustrate negative campaigning techniques. Finally the
paper discusses the issues and justifies the position that
negative political campaigning is damaging and harmful to
democracy. The bibliography cites 15 sources.

The
Electoral College: Best Way To Elect The President
[ send
me this paper ]
7 pages in length. The United States is fighting hard to
uphold its sense of democratic application when it comes to
political voting. Even so, the general public has become
nonplused by fancy talk and little action from a string of
past political leaders; as a direct result, American voters
have not been turning out in droves when time comes to vote
– until the presidential election of 2000, that is.

The
Media and Its Effects on Voting Behavior
[ send
me this paper ]
A 9 page literature review examining a blend of political
scientists' research and more casual observations regarding
how the media influences voter behavior on election day.
Most work has been centered on the television medium, with
far less attention given to radio and newspapers. What is
absolutely certain is that the media do have an impact,
though existing studies and considered observation and
experience have not been able to concur on precisely what
that impact is. Media effect on voter behavior continues to
be an area needy of study, though perhaps under better
design than that which has guided such studies in the past.

The
Presidential Campaign And Social Psychology
[ send
me this paper ]
6 pages in length. No different than advertising,
presidential campaigns strive to sell the public on a
particular candidate. The social psychology utilized in this
particular political area reflects a sometimes shadier side
of humanity as a means by which to gain the final and
deciding vote. Indeed, politicians have not earned
themselves the strongest or most upright of reputations
throughout history; it is because of their inability to
distinguish between making a genuine pledge of duty and
merely giving lip service in return for winning votes.

The
Proposed Income Tax Cut
[ send

The Pros and Cons: 7 pages. When discussing his proposed
income tax cut, President George W. Bush gets both
congratulations and shouts of derision. It seems for every

not, but that is par for the course on Capitol Hill. This
paper will take a look at both sides of this controversial
plan in order to come to an informed conclusion on the
topic. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

The
Speech of General Colin Powell before the Republican
National Convention
[ send
me this paper ]
A 10 page paper discussing the speech that General Colin
Powell made regarding the state of education in the US prior
to the official nomination of George W. Bush as the
Republican candidate for the 2000 presidential election. It
is a wonderful and rousing speech, but the greatest evidence
of the effectiveness of General Powell's speech does not lie
with those who agree to his statements, but rather with
those who agree with little or none of it. The biting
sarcasm that at least one critic managed to convey speaks
more as to the effectiveness of General Powell's speech than
could anyone who agrees with his statements. Bibliography
lists 4 sources.

The
United States And Europe: Comparing Voting Democracies
[ send
me this paper ]
6 pages in length. The idea of democracy, as America's
forefathers originally intended it to represent, was that of
the ultimate evolution of human life. The concept, which was
just a seed when it was established in the United States
over two hundred years ago, allowed for people to make their
own destinies -- to follow whatever dreams they harbored
deep inside. Democracy unleashed a joining together of the
people so that new economic and political ideas could be
shared in a way they had not been before. Democracy truly
has the ability to empower both the people and the
government, allowing people to no longer felt suppressed and
unimportant in matters that affect their very lives.
However, that is not the case in Europe where rumblings of a
painful past are beginning to influence the present.

can be seen as facilitating democracy rather than
manipulating it. The bibliography cites 6 sources.

Voting
in the United States
[ send

This 5 page report discusses voter participation and the
lack of it in U.S. elections. Only 49 percent of the people
of eligible age participated in the 1996 presidential
election that re-elected Bill Clinton to the White House and

House of Representatives. Unless American citizens make the
effort to participate in the democratic reality of the
